When selecting seeds, the priority is not just high yield but also field reliability. The "Izumrud" spring barley variety from the Orenburg State Agrarian University (originator: Vyatka State Agricultural Academy) has proven to be a workhorse in regions with challenging farming conditions.

Field performance and disease resistance

Unlike some high-maintenance hybrids, "Izumrud" stands out due to its resilience. For any agronomist, plant health is the biggest concern. Field observations confirm that this variety possesses a strong natural defense system, effectively resisting several common pathogens:

• Verticillium wilt and Helminthosporium;
• Various types of root rot;
• Phomopsis and Cylindrosporium;
• Onion stem smut.

This level of natural protection allows for significant savings on fungicide applications. While it doesn't eliminate the need for crop protection, it allows you to stick to a standard, cost-effective spraying schedule without needing premium, specialized chemicals.

Grain quality and economic impact

For us, the protein content (nitrogenous substances) is the gold standard. "Izumrud" consistently delivers 11–12% in the dry matter, which is an excellent result for feed barley. With proper agronomy, the grain fills well and maintains a high test weight, making it easier to handle during harvest and storage, and ultimately more profitable at the point of sale.

Operationally, this variety is straightforward. It doesn't require any specific equipment modifications. It responds well to fertilization and remains stable even if planting dates are slightly shifted due to weather or equipment delays, providing the predictability that every producer needs.
