Jonathan

Jonathan apple tree — a high-yielding late-winter variety developed in 1886 by selection of seedlings of the Esop Spiesburg variety, American selection. Trees of medium growth vigor, reaching 3-3.5 meters in height, have a wide, slightly spreading, moderately dense crown. The variety is distinguished by early fruiting — the first fruits appear already on the 2nd-3rd year after planting. Jonathan is registered in Ukraine and widely used both in private orchards and commercial horticulture. Jonathan apples are characterized by uniformity and large size, weighing 120-160 grams. They have round-conical or round shape with smooth surface, sometimes slightly ribbed at the top. Main color of the apples is greenish-yellow, with intense diffuse or striped dark-red blush covering almost the entire fruit surface. Skin is smooth and attractive, giving the fruits excellent market appearance. Flesh is juicy, dense, with an amazing dessert flavor combining sweetness with slight acidity and wine notes. Fruits have a memorable aroma and good transportability. Ripening period falls at the end of September — beginning of October, and storage is possible until the end of May. The variety is resistant to scab, simplifying care and improving fruit quality.
