Wheat KWS Espinum

German breeding for challenging environments

The KWS Espinum winter wheat hybrid from KWS Lochow GmbH is a direct response to the climate challenges of recent years. Developed in Germany and officially registered in Ukraine in 2026, this complex hybrid is designed to secure stable yields under fluctuating moisture conditions.

Field performance and resilience

The core strength of KWS Espinum lies in its ability to maintain productivity where conventional varieties often fail. The hybrid demonstrates high adaptability to environmental stressors:

• Drought tolerance: The hybrid's genetic architecture allows for efficient moisture utilization during critical growth stages, which is vital for the southern and central regions of Ukraine.
• Heat resistance: The plant maintains photosynthetic activity even during high temperatures during grain filling, preventing premature ripening and shriveled grains.
• Lodging resistance: Despite its vigorous growth, the stem possesses high structural integrity, minimizing yield losses during strong winds and heavy rainfall.

The variety's phytosanitary profile allows for reduced fungicide application. KWS Espinum exhibits complex resistance to major leaf diseases and Fusarium head blight, ensuring crop purity and high grain quality even under high disease pressure in the field.

Agronomic insights

Due to its plasticity, the hybrid is ideally suited for high-risk farming zones. It shows excellent tillering capacity, allowing for reduced seeding rates without compromising stand density. This makes it an economically viable solution for farms focused on lowering the cost per ton of production through optimized seed usage.
