Mystery (Weigela Thunb.) – a compact deciduous shrub up to 1.5–2 m in height and approximately 1.5–2 m in diameter, distinguished by its unusual leaf color change: from greenish-yellow to ghostly rainbow creamy shade. The leaves are oval-lanceolate, wrinkled, dark reddish-brown with a serrated edge and a smooth transition into the petiole.
The shrub grows quickly, but with proper pruning after the first flowering burst, it is stimulated to rebloom in the current season. Flowers – purplish-red, 1.8–2 cm in diameter, gathered in inflorescences of 3–6 pieces, with a bright center and a yellow spot. They open in spring and continue to bloom until July, adding an attractive appearance for butterflies.
Mystery is resistant to waterlogging, drought, diseases and pests, and also withstands frost well. It grows best in rich, well-drained soils with good permeability, in a sunny place, protected from wind. To maintain its shape, rejuvenating pruning is recommended every 2–3 years and in spring/autumn if needed. The shrub can be used as a single landscape element, in groups or as a living fence, and is also suitable for naturalistic compositions, flower beds and parks.
