Watermelon Kholodok

Technical Specifications

The «Kholodok» watermelon is a late-maturing cultivar designed for extended shelf life and harvest stability. Developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing, this hybrid/variety reflects a focus on genetic purity and robust performance. With a maturity window of 90–100 days, it is classified as a mid-late cultivar suitable for regions requiring durable fruit transport.

Disease Resistance and Biological Shield

The core of the «Kholodok» variety is its sophisticated immune system. It features high genetic resistance to Fusarium wilt, a critical factor for preventing crop failure in contaminated soils. The selection process prioritized multi-pathogen defense, specifically against:

• Anthracnose: Inhibits the development of fruit and leaf spotting.
• Powdery Mildew: Minimizes foliage damage, preserving the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
• Fusarium: Protects the plant's vascular system from fungal blockages.

Fruit Morphology and Commercial Value

The fruits reach a weight of 3.0–5.0 kg and exhibit a rounded to elongated-rounded geometry. The internal structure consists of dense red or pink flesh with distinct organoleptic properties. A defining feature is the high density of the rind, which serves two practical purposes: it enhances transportability and allows for storage over several months without significant quality degradation. This makes the cultivar a reliable choice for extending the commercial availability of watermelons well into the off-season.
