The Bogatyrskiy watermelon variety is a mid-late variety with a maturity period of 90-95 days, intended for cultivation both in open ground and in film greenhouses. The plant is powerful and vining, with a main vine length of over 5 meters, which ensures good development and high yield even under unfavorable summer conditions. The fruits have an elongated spherical shape with a characteristic pattern of dark green, almost black, prickly stripes; the average weight is about 5-5.2 kg, reaching 7-8 kg with good care. The fruit skin is thin and leathery, which promotes good storage of watermelons for up to three months after harvest.
The flesh of the Bogatyrskiy watermelon is bright red, fine-grained, juicy and honey-flavored, with a rich watermelon aroma, making this variety particularly appealing to consumers. The variety is distinguished by its resistance to main diseases, which facilitates care and reduces the risk of crop loss. For sowing seedlings, late April is recommended, and seedling transplant should be carried out at the end of May – beginning of June, which is optimal for forming strong plants and obtaining quality fruits.
When growing the plant, it is tied to a trellis, removing all side shoots up to a height of 50 cm and pinching subsequent ones above the 1-3 leaf, which promotes better ventilation and fruit development. Growing in free culture on the ground is also possible. The recommended planting scheme is 70x150 cm. Irrigation should be moderate, especially during the fruit ripening period, to ensure optimal conditions for forming the taste and juiciness of watermelons.
