Fernet

Fernet is a new high-yielding variety of hazelnut of French selection, a hybrid of Franquette and Lara varieties. Trees are medium-sized with dense, rounded crowns and well-branched trunks. Female flowers bloom later than male ones, ensuring late flowering of the variety. Fruit production begins on the 6th-8th year after planting, while maximum yield is achieved at 15-20 years of age, reaching 90-110 kg per tree. The variety is also used as a pollinator for other varieties, such as Chandler. Fernet fruits have an elongated-oval shape, resembling Franquette but with a more conical form. Nuts are medium-sized, 60% of fruits exceed 32 mm, the average weight of one fruit is 14-15 grams. The shell is light-colored, medium-thick, firmly attached, but easily separates without damaging the kernel. The kernel is light-colored, tender, with high content — 40-50% of the fruit's weight, easily extracted and possessing excellent taste qualities, slightly sweeter than Franquette. Nuts store well and are suitable for long-distance transportation. The Fernet variety is characterized by high fruiting speed and good storage stability. However, it is sensitive to bacterial burn and anthracnose, requiring careful care and plant protection. Due to its characteristics, Fernet is intended for the market and sold as clean kernels, making it attractive for commercial cultivation and consumption.
