Bolhradskaya Novinka

Funduk of the "Bolhradskaya Novinka" variety is a medium-sized shrub with a spreading crown and branches that grow at a right angle. This variety was developed in Ukraine and officially registered since 1981 in the Steppe zone; it is characterized by high winter hardiness and stable yield. The shrubs can reach up to 4.5 meters in height, while the undergrowth does not overly shade the plant, facilitating training for stem cultivation. The medium maturation period allows harvesting at optimal times, and by the seventh year, the yield reaches approximately 7 kg per bush, equivalent to about 13 centners per hectare, with maximum yields reaching up to 23.8 centners per hectare.

The fruits of the "Bolhradskaya Novinka" variety have round or oval shapes, with each nut weighing between 1.4 and 2 grams. The shell is of medium thickness, hard, brown with slight striping and a slight taper at the tip. The kernel is dense, cream-colored, with a kernel extraction rate ranging from 46.2% to 51%, which is a good indicator. The fat content in the kernel reaches 64.5–70%, while protein content is around 16–20.3%. The nuts have a pleasant taste and received a tasting score of 4.8 points, confirming their high quality.

The variety is adaptable to various growing conditions, but requires protection against the hazelnut weevil, which is its main drawback. Rooting via cuttings and green cuttings is weak, so it is recommended to use suitable pollinators such as common hazelnut, varieties Dolinsky, Dar Pavlenko, and Stepny. Due to its characteristics and potential, this variety is recommended for testing and cultivation in the North Caucasus region and other zones with similar climatic conditions.
