Tulip Princess Irene

Cultivating Princess Irene: Practical Insights

For professional growers, the 'Princess Irene' tulip is more than just a decorative plant; it is a reliable asset for mid-season production. As part of the Triumph class, it provides the uniformity required for high-volume cut flower operations.

Operational Performance and Agrotechnics

• Stalk Integrity: With a low height profile (30–40 cm), this cultivar eliminates the need for support grids. The stems are robust and resistant to snapping, which simplifies harvesting and handling.
• Forcing and Maintenance: Being a mid-season bloomer, it responds best to precise temperature control. During the rooting phase, ensure proper drainage; the variety performs best in well-aerated substrates to avoid root stress.
• Resilience: It features strong natural resistance to common bulb diseases, allowing growers to reduce the frequency of fungicide applications without compromising health.

Market Value and Post-Harvest

The standout feature of 'Princess Irene' is its striking orange hue with dramatic purple flames. Beyond aesthetics, the variety is highly valued for its post-harvest longevity. It maintains turgidity exceptionally well during transport, ensuring high shelf life at retail. When planning your production schedule, keep in mind that consistent nitrogen levels are key to maintaining the correct foliage-to-stem ratio, preventing the 'stretching' often seen in less balanced varieties. Using 12+ cm bulbs is recommended for optimal yield consistency in greenhouse conditions.
