Tulip Willem van Oranje

A Vibrant Peony-like Garden Accent

The Willem van Oranje tulip is a classic that remains timeless thanks to its saturated, almost luminous coloring. As a member of the early double flowering class, this hybrid is among the first to welcome the spring, turning garden beds into a bright orange canvas long before most other bulbs wake from their winter slumber.

What sets this variety apart?

• Visual Density: Unlike simple cup-shaped tulips, this variety boasts a multi-petaled structure reminiscent of a peony. The dense bud holds its shape remarkably well, refusing to splay open even in typical unpredictable spring winds.
• Compact Habit: Its low stature is a primary advantage for landscape design. It is perfectly suited for the foreground of borders, containers, or garden pots, where taller varieties might look out of place or be prone to lodging.
• Color Stability: A pure, intense orange is often considered «tricky» in breeding, but here it is perfectly balanced: the petals do not fade in the early spring sun and maintain their depth until the end of the blooming cycle.

Who is this tulip for?

If you are looking for a striking accent for an alpine slide or planning a forcing program for early cutting, Willem van Oranje is an excellent choice. It does not require complex maintenance, though gardeners should remember: like all early double tulips, it is sensitive to excessive soil moisture during its dormant period. For lush blooms year after year, prioritize planting sites with excellent drainage.

While this variety may not reach the height desired by those who prefer tall bouquets, it wins decisively in terms of aesthetic structure. It is the ideal selection for those who appreciate cozy, dense compositions and value an early, vibrant awakening of the garden.
