The Flying Dutchman is a classic Triumph tulip variety that has proven itself as a reliable choice for Ukrainian growers. Whether you are aiming for landscape aesthetics or professional-grade cut flowers, this hybrid is known for its structural integrity. The primary operational advantage is its robust stem, which remains upright and sturdy even under challenging spring conditions, reducing the need for staking or extra support.

Light requirements and maintenance

To maximize performance, it is crucial to manage the light environment correctly. Flying Dutchman is highly adaptable, thriving in both full sun and partial shade. However, in low-light environments, one should be cautious: excessive stretching of the stem can occur, which may impact the commercial value for cutting. A balanced fertilization program during the early spring will help maintain stem rigidity.

• Planting: Target a soil temperature of 9-10°C in September or October. A depth of three bulb heights is the standard for proper root development and winter protection.
• Watering and Soil: While moisture is vital during the growth phase in April and May, drainage is non-negotiable. Excess water leads to basal rot, a common issue for this variety in damp soil.
• Post-bloom management: Remove spent flower heads promptly to prevent energy loss to seed production. Foliage should only be removed after it has naturally withered and turned yellow, ensuring the bulb has fully recharged for the next cycle.

Propagation and Storage

Flying Dutchman offers an excellent reproduction rate. With a proper drying cycle during the summer, the daughter bulbs gain mass quickly. For maintenance, store the lifted bulbs in a dry, well-ventilated area at approximately 20°C until late summer. This controlled rest period is key to maintaining consistent bloom quality year after year.
