Tulip Empire State

Growing Experience: The Empire State Tulip

Working with the Empire State variety requires understanding its nuances. Unlike industrial-grade tulips, this is a premium, high-maintenance cultivar that demands specific conditions to thrive. Its double-flower structure is quite heavy, meaning the stem needs stability; avoid exposed, wind-swept areas to prevent the blooms from nodding or snapping.

Operational Guidelines

• Sun Exposure: This variety excels in full sun but adapts well to partial shade. However, prioritize locations with well-draining soil—the bulbs are sensitive to excessive moisture, which is the primary cause of rot in this variety.
• Scent Profile: One of the standout features of Empire State is its potent, distinct fragrance. It is not just a visual spectacle; it is an olfactory one. When designing your garden beds, consider placing them near pathways or seating areas to fully appreciate the aroma.
• Planting Strategy: Due to the sheer size of the double blooms, individual planting doesn't yield the best visual impact. We recommend planting in dense groups to create a unified mass of pink. This also provides mutual support to the stems in adverse weather conditions.

Maintenance is straightforward but vital: consistent irrigation during the budding phase is essential. Post-bloom fertilization with potassium-rich compounds is non-negotiable; if you skip this, the bulbs will not store enough energy to sustain the double-petal form in the following season. In the Ukrainian climate, the bulbs overwinter well, but we suggest mulching if the winter is particularly harsh or lacks snow cover. For growers who prioritize floral density and fragrance over low-maintenance perennials, Empire State is a top-tier choice that rewards diligent care.
