Tomato Volshebnik

Academic Breeding Excellence

The “Volshebnik” (Magician) tomato is a product of fundamental research conducted by the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics. Developed by a team of leading scientists, including Yury Altukhov and Valentina Zhidkova, this variety reflects an academic approach to plant breeding that prioritizes genetic purity and stability over the ephemeral trends of the commercial seed market. Unlike many modern, short-lived hybrids, Volshebnik remains a reliable staple for growers who prioritize consistent performance.

Key Characteristics and Versatility

The variety shows a remarkable range of adaptability, with a growing period of 100–120 days. It is recognized for its versatility in fruit morphology:

• Fruit Size: The weight ranges from 80 grams to over 200 grams, making it suitable for both canning and fresh market sales.
• Color Palette: A genetically ingrained trait that allows the plant to produce red, yellow, and orange fruits.
• Yield Potential: Under optimal agricultural practices, the variety can achieve yields of up to 50 tons per hectare.
• Form: The fruits exhibit both round and flat shapes, catering to various culinary requirements.

Market Positioning

Volshebnik occupies a unique niche for growers who value predictability. Its reputation is built on a balance between low-maintenance requirements and high-quality output. Whether for small-scale gardening or mid-sized farming, this variety stands out due to its resilience under varying climatic conditions, a hallmark of the Vavilov Institute’s breeding programs. It serves as a classic choice for those seeking high-quality, verified seed material with a documented pedigree.
