Description FRKL 1
Timothy (Phléum) – a perennial grass of the timothy family, characterized by high cold hardiness and resistance to various soil conditions, including clay, loamy sand, and loamy soils. The plant germinates quickly in the spring months, flowering begins in June–July, and fruits ripen by August–September. Due to its resistance to cold and moderate soil acidity, timothy is suitable for cultivation in both northern and more moderate climatic zones.

The fodder quality of timothy is highly valued: hay contains about 40 kg/ha of fodder energy and 4 kg of digestible protein, while green mass yields up to 200 kg/ha with 1.5 kg of protein. Green mass yield reaches 200 kg/ha, and hay yield ranges from 400 to 500 kg/ha at a sowing rate of 8–15 kg/ha. The plant grows rapidly in its early years and can persist in grass mixtures for up to 5–15 years, but after flowering, the stems become coarse, reducing fodder value.

Timothy is widely used as lawn grass, especially in mixtures with red clover and other perennial grasses. It is also used for making hay, silage, and silage, and in some regions, for draining bogs due to its moisture-loving nature. When cultivating, it is important to consider moisture requirements: the plant does not tolerate drought and prolonged shading well, but grows well on wet clay soils. Growth height reaches 100–120 cm, and growth begins at temperatures around 5–6 °C.

Thus, timothy is a universal fodder plant with high yield and good adaptability to different climatic conditions, suitable both for producing quality hay and for creating decorative lawns in moderate regions.
