Sugar corn MELINA (SCG 6872 F1) is a new hybrid of super-sweet corn (sh2+) distinguished by high heat and drought tolerance. This hybrid has successfully passed trials under complex climatic conditions, demonstrating stable formation of two ears per plant. The vegetation period is about 68-73 days, allowing for harvest in relatively short time. Plants reach a height of 180-200 cm, while ears have a length of 24-26 cm and a diameter of about 6 cm, with one ear weighing up to 800 grams. The ear tip is well covered by leaves, protecting the kernels from damage and preserving their quality. MELINA corn kernels have a dark yellow color with a sheen and a deep rectangular shape. The total sugar content in the kernels ranges from 18-20%, ensuring a very sweet taste without a starchy aftertaste. The taste is preserved for a long time after harvest, making this hybrid particularly attractive for fresh consumption. Corn is also suitable for storage and processing, with a storage duration of up to two weeks at a temperature of 18-20 °C. The hybrid is resistant to Goss's wilt, which further increases its reliability and crop quality. For growing MELINA corn, a sowing rate of 40-45 thousand plants per hectare without irrigation and 50-70 thousand per hectare with irrigation is recommended, which is optimal for the conditions of southern Russia. The dense dark green husk provides additional protection for the kernels, and high resistance to unfavorable conditions allows for a stable yield even in complex climatic situations. Thanks to its characteristics and taste qualities, the MELINA hybrid is an excellent choice for farmers focused on producing high-quality sugar corn for the fresh market and processing.
