Technological potential of the Baster hybrid

The breeding efforts of Kmk Agro on the Baster hybrid are focused on solving a key issue in intensive sunflower farming: combining high oil content with strict phytosanitary control. As a simple hybrid with a growing period of 100–110 days, Baster belongs to the mid-early group, which allows for flexible harvest logistics and helps avoid critical weather risks at the end of the season.

Biological protection and herbicide strategy

A key feature of this hybrid is its integration with the Euro-Lightning protection system. This allows agronomists to use post-emergence imidazolinone treatment, effectively eliminating weed issues with annual broad-leaved and grass weeds, including problematic species like broomrape. The genetic resistance to a complex of pathogens, including white rot, charcoal rot, and septoria, is complemented by high tolerance to a wide spectrum of diseases:

• Powdery mildew and brown spot;
• Phomopsis and phoma;
• Mycosphaerella spot.

This array of defensive traits minimizes the need for fungicide applications, allowing the plant to direct its energy toward head development rather than fighting infection.

Morphology and productivity

With a height of 170–180 cm, the plant features an architecture optimized for mechanized harvesting. Under these parameters, the hybrid forms a dense, well-filled head. The oil content in the seeds ranges from 45–50%, which meets current processing industry standards for high-quality raw commodities. Stability throughout all growth stages ensures predictable performance even under moderate environmental stress.
