Sugar beet Kiwa / Kiva

Genetic Resilience of KWS Kiva

The productivity profile of the KWS Kiva sugar beet hybrid is built upon a foundation of complex biological resistance. The primary engineering challenge addressed by the breeder is the critical balance between high sucrose accumulation and robust tolerance to key beet pathogens.

Phytopathological Defense as an Economic Asset

Resistance to Rhizoctonia is a decisive factor for regions prone to soil-borne infections. Kiva maintains stable root development even under intense pathogen pressure, safeguarding yield potential where other hybrids often suffer from tissue decay. A multi-layered defense is provided by resistance to leaf diseases:

• Cercospora leaf spot — preserving the assimilation apparatus during peak heat periods.
• Ramularia leaf spot — preventing premature foliage senescence.
• Powdery mildew — maintaining efficient photosynthesis during the peak sugar accumulation phase.

Root Morphology and Harvest Efficiency

The oval-conical root shape is intentionally engineered for mechanical harvesting. This geometry ensures an optimal balance between root depth and soil contact surface. Minimal secondary root development and deep soil positioning allow harvesters to operate with minimal harvest loss, preserving the integrity of the root and preventing weight reduction during transport.

Technical Summary

Opting for Kiva is a strategic move toward optimizing fungicide inputs. Through inherent genetic resistance to pathogens, the hybrid enables a more rational approach to crop protection, focusing on targeted management rather than blanket chemical applications. This is a technical solution designed to secure a high-quality harvest with maximum sugar yield, even in challenging phytosanitary conditions.
