Southern Sorghum — this is a drought-resistant grain variety, ideally suited for cultivation in the conditions of Ukraine's Southern Steppe. This crop is characterized by high plasticity and ability to withstand adverse conditions, including drought and saline soils. Thanks to its deep root system, penetrating 2–2.5 meters, sorghum can effectively utilize moisture from deeper soil layers, ensuring a stable yield even with annual precipitation below 400 mm, where other crops, such as corn, often fail to deliver satisfactory results.
The Southern variety is characterized by high productivity, cold resistance, and significant bushiness, making it suitable for arid regions and multiple cropping. Sorghum grain has a bronze color and high starch content, enhancing its nutritional value and making the crop versatile for various uses — both food and technical applications. Additionally, Southern sorghum is resistant to pests, particularly the sorghum aphid, reducing the risk of yield loss.
This crop is not demanding in terms of cultivation and maintenance conditions, making it attractive for farmers in regions with limited resources. The harvested grain requires further processing using grain cleaning equipment to ensure high product quality. Ukraine has a favorable geographical position for exporting sorghum, opening additional opportunities for sales and development of the agricultural sector in southern regions of the country.
