SU Mephisto

The SU Mephisto winter rye variety is a hybrid winter rye developed by Saaten Union, distinguished by its high yield potential and excellent resistance to powdery mildew. This variety forms a strong root system, enabling successful cultivation even on sandy soils. SU Mephisto rye features medium stem height with thick walls, providing good lodging resistance, as well as high resistance to shattering and drought tolerance, contributing to stable yields under various stress conditions.

SU Mephisto exhibits high winter hardiness and resistance to a broad spectrum of diseases, including Fusarium, false powdery mildew, rhiophytophthora, brown rust, and powdery mildew. Thanks to these qualities, the need for plant protection products is reduced, making cultivation more economical and environmentally friendly. The spike of this variety consists of two bisexual flowers, forming small cylindrical grains with a higher-than-average number of seeds per spike.

In terms of grain quality, SU Mephisto has higher-than-average starch content and lower-than-average protein content, which affects the technological properties of the raw material. Viscosity amylogram is at an average level, and gelatinization temperature is above average, which is important for bakery industry and other uses of rye. For optimal development in early stages, nitrogen fertilizers are recommended, promoting high and stable yields.
