Registered in 2024, the «VanKlo» rootstock (breeder: Yarmoliuk Ivan Savych) is a selection solution focused on adaptability across Ukraine's diverse climatic conditions. Due to its morphological traits, this rootstock exhibits moderate vigor, which is a critical factor for establishing intensive orchards where tree habit control is essential.

Field Performance and Adaptation

«VanKlo» demonstrates high plasticity, confirmed by its approval for cultivation in all key zones: Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya. Key characteristics influencing its resilience:

• Response to Stress Factors: The weak growth vigor combined with moderate anthocyanin coloration of shoot tips indicates a balanced distribution of nutrients. This allows the plant to cope more effectively with drought periods typical of the Steppe zone.
• Canopy Architecture: The spreading habit and strong branching contribute to the development of a robust root system capable of supporting the tree even under intensive cropping loads.
• Disease Resistance: Morphological features, such as moderate pubescence on the underside of the leaf and the presence of nectaries, create a physical barrier against initial pest colonization, reducing the need for chemical pesticide applications.

Short internodes and medium shoot thickness provide high mechanical strength, minimizing the risk of lodging or trunk damage during strong winds. «VanKlo» is not prone to excessive vegetative growth at the end of the summer, which facilitates better wood hardening for the winter period and increases the overall winter hardiness of the grafted varieties.
