Description

VSL-2 rootstock is the result of a laboratory cross between Prunus cerasus (wild cherry) and Prunus lanzi (Lanziana cherry), obtained in the Krasnodar Krai. It is distinguished by its semi-dwarf growth, which allows for the formation of compact trees that are approximately 50% shorter than those using traditional grafts. Consequently, this rootstock is particularly valuable for intensive plantations with a density of 800 to 1000 trees per hectare.

Key characteristics of VSL-2 include high compatibility with all varieties of cherries and sweet cherries, frost resistance (root systems withstand temperatures down to -12 °C), and resistance to a wide range of diseases: root cancer, cockle, nematodes, and bacterial cancer. The rootstock grows well on heavy, waterlogged soils, does not form root suckers, and maintains drought resistance.

Seedlings obtained from this rootstock begin to bear fruit quickly – the first harvest appears as early as 2-3 years after planting. The productive period lasts from 15 to 18 years, during which the trees demonstrate regular and stable fruiting. VSL-2 rootstock is also easily propagated via green cuttings (93%) and semi-woody (72%) cuttings as well as horizontal layers, ensuring ease of its distribution in nurseries.

Thus, VSL-2 rootstock represents a reliable choice for gardeners seeking compact, frost-resistant, and highly productive cherry and sweet cherry trees with minimal care and disease protection costs.
