Rootstock VSV 1.1

A Promising Ukrainian Rootstock: Key Features of VSV 1.1

Registered in 2024, the VSV 1.1 rootstock by FOP Matsenko M.O. is a breeding innovation designed for orchards with controlled growth vigor. Unlike highly vigorous counterparts, this rootstock provides moderate tree development energy, which is critical for intensive horticulture where crown compactness and ease of maintenance are paramount.

Morphological Advantages

Visually, VSV 1.1 is easily identified in the nursery due to the specific structure of its shoots and leaves:

• Compactness: short internodes and thin one-year-old shoots contribute to a balanced tree structure.
• Foliage: narrow-elliptic, dark green leaves with moderate glossiness and a characteristic crenate-serrate margin.
• Propagation ease: moderate branching at the end of summer and the presence of pubescence on young shoots and petioles facilitate nursery handling.

The absence of nectaries and stipules simplifies phytosanitary monitoring, while the weak intensity of anthocyanin coloration in young leaves allows for easy tracking of active growth phases. The appressed position of vegetative buds and their small size indicate high adaptability to various climatic conditions.

Adaptation and Application

VSV 1.1 is officially recommended for cultivation across all key agro-climatic zones of Ukraine: Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya. This broad geographical range makes it a versatile tool for growers aiming for stable yields regardless of regional climate variations. Due to its moderate growth vigor, this rootstock is ideal for establishing modern orchards that require high planting density and efficient land use.
