Rootstock V 5 88

Technical Profile of the V 5-88 Rootstock

Developed by the VNIISPK breeding institute, V 5-88 is an essential tool for intensive cherry orchard management, specifically designed to control tree vigor. As a dwarfing rootstock, it allows for high-density planting while optimizing the physiological balance of the scion.

Biological Resilience and Adaptability

The primary value of this rootstock lies in its inherent resistance to soil-borne pathogens and pests, which are the main limiting factors for orchard longevity. Its technical specifications include:

• Phytosanitary Defense: Superior resistance to root rots, making it a reliable choice for sites with poor drainage or heavy clay soils.
• Pest Immunity: Genetic resistance to phylloxera and nematodes ensures the integrity of the root system and efficient vascular transport throughout the plant's lifespan.
• Cold Hardiness: Capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -35°C, this rootstock is uniquely suited for continental climates where standard clonal rootstocks often fail due to winter injury.

Operational Advantages for High-Density Orchards

V 5-88 simplifies orchard management by directing photosynthates toward fruit production rather than excessive vegetative growth. This dwarfing characteristic makes pruning and harvesting significantly more efficient. The graft compatibility with a wide range of cherry varieties ensures strong structural integrity at the graft union, preventing breakage under heavy fruit loads and ensuring consistent annual yields.
