Peony Tenderness

The Aesthetics of 'Nezhnost': A Benchmark in Russian Breeding

The 'Nezhnost' (Tenderness) peony is a testament to the decades of work by breeders at the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production and Moscow State University, led by Marianna Uspenskaya. While the market is often flooded with imported Dutch varieties, this Russian hybrid stands out for its reliability and resilience to unpredictable weather patterns.

Key Specifications and Dimensions

The primary strength of this variety is its compact architecture. Growing to a height of 60 cm, it does not require elaborate support systems, making it a pragmatic choice for smaller private gardens. Despite the modest size of the plant, the blooms are magnificent: the fully double flowers reach a diameter of 15 to 18 cm. The soft pink hue and dense petal arrangement provide an airy, elegant aesthetic rarely seen in taller, coarser varieties.

Pros and Cons

• Strengths: Exceptional performance in cut flower arrangements—the dense petals retain their freshness and shape for an extended period. Its sturdy stems provide excellent resistance to lodging. The balance between flower size and bush height makes it an versatile tool for landscape design.
• Weaknesses: Like many double-flowered varieties, 'Nezhnost' is sensitive to excessive moisture during peak bloom. Heavy rainfall can weigh down the large, water-absorbent blooms, so minimal support might be necessary in particularly wet summers.

Who is this variety for?

'Nezhnost' is an ideal choice for landscape designers working on foreground and mid-ground floral displays. The plant is devoid of ostentatious traits, fitting seamlessly into both classic English garden settings and modern minimalist landscapes. It is best suited for gardeners who value established breeding traditions and seek a proven, low-maintenance, yet visually stunning addition to their collection.
