Peony TEMPEST

Reliable Landscape Performance: The 'Tempest' Peony

For large-scale landscaping and garden design where frost resistance and longevity are paramount, the 'Tempest' peony (originated by APO 'Taytsy') stands out as a top-tier choice. This herbaceous variety is prized for its ability to thrive in the same spot for up to 20 years, provided the basic site requirements are met.

Agronomic Requirements

One of the primary benefits of this variety is its extreme winter hardiness, capable of surviving temperatures down to -40 °C. To ensure vibrant red blooms and long-term vitality, focus on these site conditions:

• Solar Exposure: Full sun is non-negotiable. Reduced light exposure leads to weak stems and a significant decline in flower production.
• Soil Structure: Well-drained loamy soils are ideal. Because the root system is prone to rot in waterlogged conditions, ensure that drainage is adequate, especially in heavier soil types.
• Soil Chemistry: Aim for a slightly acidic environment with a pH between 6 and 7 for optimal nutrient uptake.

Practical Application in Garden Management

'Tempest' is primarily utilized in scenarios where low-maintenance, high-impact landscaping is required:

• Structural Planting: Perfect for garden borders or mass planting along walkways where color consistency is needed.
• Minimal Maintenance Zones: Its ability to remain decorative for two decades without needing constant division or replanting makes it a cost-effective choice for public or semi-public gardens.
• Winter Resilience: The extreme cold tolerance eliminates the labor-intensive need for winter covering, making it suitable for harsh northern climates.

When planning your layout, maintain a spacing of at least 80–100 cm between plants. This encourages optimal air circulation, which is key to preventing fungal issues. By focusing on correct drainage and site selection, 'Tempest' provides a trouble-free solution for adding a deep, bold red color to any garden setting.
