Peony LOVE

MSU Breeding Heritage: Peony 'Lubov'

The 'Lubov' peony is a product of the breeding program at the Lomonosov Moscow State University Botanical Garden. This variety exemplifies the classic Russian school of herbaceous peony breeding, where priority is placed not only on aesthetic qualities but also on the biological longevity of the plant. In temperate climates, the cultivar demonstrates a remarkable ability to thrive in the same location for up to 50 years, necessitating a precise approach to planting site preparation.

Technical Aspects of the Lifecycle

The resilience of this variety is rooted in its robust rhizome system, which, under proper horticultural management, can maintain vegetative mass for decades without signs of degradation. Unlike intensive greenhouse hybrids, the 'Lubov' variety is specifically adapted to moderate climates, reducing the risk of root rot provided that the bud planting depth is maintained (a standard 3–5 cm below the soil surface).

• Biological Resource: With proper crop rotation and the absence of groundwater stagnation, the plant maintains its cultivar characteristics for up to half a century.
• Bush Architecture: Strong, sturdy stems ensure the garden remains decorative even during heavy rainfall, minimizing the need for artificial supports.
• Horticultural Application: The variety is perfectly suited for long-term landscape design concepts, where the key factor is minimizing the costs associated with annual replanting.

It is recommended to plant in sunny areas with well-drained loamy soils. The metabolic stability of this peony allows it to efficiently absorb nutrients from organic fertilizers applied during site preparation, making it an optimal choice for ornamental garden displays and group compositions.
