Peony Lvivs'ka Chokolyadka

Agrotechnical Performance of the Itoh Hybrid

«Lvivska Chocoladka» is a notable cultivar developed by the M.M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden. As a true Itoh hybrid, it requires specific management to reach its full potential. The plant is bred for garden aesthetics and cut flowers, but it performs best when placed in an open, sunny location. A lack of light will immediately manifest in reduced flower size and a duller raspberry hue of the petals.

Operational Guidelines

• Soil Requirements: The variety thrives only in fertile soils. Given its height of 80 cm, the root system requires significant nutrient availability to maintain vigorous growth throughout the season.
• Watering Management: With moderate drought tolerance, the plant should not be allowed to dry out completely, especially during the bloom cycle (May 31 – June 15). Consistent soil moisture is the primary factor in sustaining the 15 cm flower diameter.
• Maintenance and Cut Flower Utility: The stems are structurally robust, making this cultivar an excellent choice for cut flower production. No staking is generally required, which reduces labor during the intensive flowering window.
• Seasonal Care: Itoh hybrids are known for their resilience, but for optimal garden performance, clean up the foliage after the first frost to prevent moisture retention near the crown.

By providing a rich soil profile and sufficient sunlight, the operator ensures a long-lived, low-maintenance garden asset that delivers consistent results annually. It is a reliable cultivar that minimizes the need for frequent intervention once established.
