Onion Titus

An Engineering Approach to Vegetable Growing: Titus Leek

In developing the "Titus" variety, the Czech breeding company Moravoseed focused on solving specific agrotechnical challenges: crop uniformity and adaptability to mechanized harvesting. Unlike loose-structured hybrids, "Titus" features a dense, compact stem structure, which is critical for maintaining marketability during transport and long-term storage.

Morphology and Vegetative Potential

This variety belongs to the mid-late maturity group. Technical maturity involves the formation of a robust, tightly packed stalk. A key characteristic is the genetically inherent resistance to stress factors, which allows the crop to develop stably in temperate climate conditions. The foliage has a deep, dark green hue with a pronounced waxy coating—a natural barrier against moisture loss and pest infiltration.

Technological Advantages in Cultivation

• Productive Part Formation: The variety is designed to minimize the formation of a "knee" at the base, which simplifies the earthing-up process.
• Quality Control: Uniform plant development within the row eliminates the need for fractional sorting, increasing the marketable yield per hectare.
• Agronomic Stability: The selection work by the originator, Moravoseed CZ a.s., focused on minimizing bolting risks, which is essential for obtaining a high-quality bleached stalk.

Choosing "Titus" is a strategic investment in efficiency. The variety is predictable in its growth stages, allowing agronomists to plan fertilizer application and crop protection schedules precisely, without having to compensate for the genetic variability often found in less stabilized varieties.
