Onion Svetoch

Technical Potential and Yield Capacity

The 'Svetoch' onion variety is a product of long-term breeding by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production. Unlike traditional mid-season varieties, 'Svetoch' is engineered for intensive farming, where the output of marketable products per unit area is the critical performance metric. With a potential yield exceeding 100 tons per hectare, it ranks among the most productive hybrid-class onions for the fresh market.

Agronomic Features and Morphology

• Usage: Salad-type. The bulbs feature a moderate pungency, making them ideal for raw consumption in fresh salads without requiring heat treatment.
• Development: The originators (the Educational and Scientific Center of the Vegetable Experimental Station) focused on high adaptability to diverse climatic conditions, which is essential for ensuring yield stability in various agricultural zones.
• Genetics: The breeding work overseen by A.N. Khovrin and V.I. Leunov ensures excellent uniformity in bulb shape and weight, which is a significant advantage for mechanized harvesting and post-harvest handling processes.

The practical value of this variety lies in the balance between high productivity and the structural integrity of the outer scales. Given its high yield ceiling, 'Svetoch' requires strict adherence to agrotechnical protocols, particularly regarding irrigation management and nitrogen application, to ensure optimal bulb maturation by harvest time. This intensive cultivation model allows growers to fully capture the variety’s genetic potential, making it a reliable solution for large-scale agricultural operations aiming for high profitability in the fresh onion segment.
