Girey — an early variety of white onion with a vegetative period of 80-90 days, intended for early harvest and salad use. The plant’s leaves are dark green with a waxy coating, indicating high disease resistance. The bulbs have a flat shape, medium size, and weigh between 110 to 160 grams. The outer scales are silver-white, while the inner ones are white and juicy, providing excellent taste and high market quality.
The Girey variety is suitable for cultivation in all regions, both by direct sowing into open ground and through seedlings. The recommended seed sowing rate is 4-5 kg per hectare, with plant density around 0.7-0.9 million per hectare. For larger bulbs, sparse planting is recommended. Under drip irrigation, use 6- or 8-row planting with 27 cm between rows and a density of 20-25 plants per linear meter. Proper sowing agronomy promotes uniform plant stand, facilitating maturation, mechanical handling, harvesting, and drying, allowing for high-quality, uniform produce.
Girey onion is a moisture-loving crop with a weak root system, requiring regular watering. During germination and until bulb formation, air humidity should be maintained at 75-80%, and during bulb formation — around 70% NH. Maximum water consumption occurs during the intensive bulb growth phase until the start of stem lodging. Yield reaches 45-60 tons per hectare, making it highly productive and popular among early white onion varieties.
