Lettuce VELADERO

The Benchmark in Leaf Lettuce Cultivation

The Veladero variety from the American agricultural leader Monsanto (operating under the Seminis Vegetable Seeds brand) has established itself as the gold standard for dark red leaf lettuce. Developed for both commercial-scale greenhouse production and intensive open-field farming, this hybrid represents a perfect balance between visual shelf appeal and agronomic resilience.

Agronomic Resilience and Disease Management

Veladero is a mid-season lettuce variety known for its reliable production cycles. A key factor behind its widespread adoption among professional growers is its robust resistance profile, which is essential for minimizing crop loss:

• High resistance to Downy Mildew (Bremia lactucae), critical for maintaining yield quality in varied climatic conditions.
• Immunity to Lettuce Mosaic Virus, ensuring leaves remain uniform, smooth, and free from mosaic-induced deformities.

Market Performance and Commercial Application

For processors and supermarket chains, Veladero is prized for its intense, deep dark red pigmentation. Unlike many other red leaf varieties, it maintains its color stability even under temperature fluctuations, making it an ideal candidate for pre-packaged salad mixes. The plant forms a compact and dense rosette structure, which is specifically optimized for mechanized harvesting, thus significantly reducing labor costs and improving harvest efficiency.

Coming from the well-regarded breeding programs of Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Veladero offers farmers the predictability of results they demand. It is not an experimental seed stock but a proven solution for growers focused on high-quality output that meets the strict demands of today's retail landscape. By choosing Veladero, growers are investing in a product that delivers consistency, market-ready presentation, and minimized operational risks.
