Lettuce Roden

Technical Specifications of the 'Roden' Variety

The Czech breeding house Semo developed 'Roden' as a specialized Batavia-type lettuce variety, focused on achieving early harvest cycles. The engineering behind this plant's genetics is centered on balancing vegetation speed with physiological resistance to key pathogens.

Phytopathological Potential

The primary advantage of 'Roden' lies in its built-in protection against two of the most critical factors for lettuce crops:

• Downy Mildew (Bremia lactucae) — a severe fungal disease capable of devastating crops in high-humidity conditions.
• Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV) — which impairs leaf development and significantly reduces market value.

Genetic resistance to these diseases minimizes the need for fungicide applications and prevents yield losses during the rosette formation phase.

Morphology and Market Quality

As a Batavia-type variety, 'Roden' forms a semi-open, well-developed rosette. Its visual profile is defined by an intense dark-red color, which remains stable even under thermal stress. The head weight falls into a medium range, ensuring optimal density for logistics and retail chains. The leaf texture possesses the essential crispness inherent to the Batavia type, making it a preferred choice for the fresh market.

Agrotechnical Insights

The variety is optimized for standard lettuce cultivation technologies, demonstrating predictable development when watering and light requirements are met. Due to its early maturation, 'Roden' allows for efficient land use in crop rotation, enabling harvest before the peak pressure of pests common to the second half of the season.
