Modesto lettuce is a mid-late variety with a vegetative period ranging from 55 to 75 days depending on growing conditions. It is characterized by high yield and heat tolerance, making it suitable for cultivation both in open ground and in unheated tunnels. Heads are medium-sized, round, slightly flattened, with dark green or pale green coloring. Leaves are entire, soft, slightly wrinkled, and densely packed, free of bitterness, and possess excellent flavor, making this variety ideal for fresh use in salads and sandwiches. Modesto lettuce requires minimal care and can be grown either by direct sowing into the ground or by seedlings. To ensure a continuous harvest, sowings should be spaced 12–15 days apart. Seeds germinate at temperatures from +3–4°C, with optimal growth occurring at +15–20°C. Plants are sensitive to overcrowding, so timely thinning is necessary to maintain the recommended plant density of 15–20 plants per square meter. Best results are achieved on light, nutrient-rich, neutral soils with moderate moisture and good permeability. In addition to its high productivity, Modesto lettuce has beneficial nutritional properties. Leaves contain vitamins C, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, and other microelements, exerting antioxidant effects, supporting metabolism, and helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The variety is resistant to CMV virus and is suitable for cultivation following crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, beets, and onions. Thanks to its short vegetative period and resilience to adverse weather conditions, Modesto lettuce is an excellent choice for obtaining early and stable yields throughout the season.
