Kiwano «Green Dragon» – an exotic fruit that resembles a cucumber in appearance and green mass. The fruits have light green flesh, juicy with a mild taste of immature watermelon, sometimes compared to papaya, melon, or bananas. Kiwano is distinguished by its high potassium content, making it beneficial for people with cardiovascular diseases, and also contributes to increased tone and immunity strengthening.
«Green Dragon» fruits can be consumed fresh, added to cocktails with dairy products or yogurt, used to prepare desserts, drinks, and even jams. Canned small fruits (gherkins) compete with regular cucumbers in taste and texture. The fruit skin can be used as a vase for serving salads, and the shell after removing the flesh – as bowls for effect dish presentation.
For growing kiwano, regular watering and mulching are recommended, especially in open ground, where the plant does not tolerate frost. Feeding is done similar to cucumbers: «Agrol» or chicken manure infusion can be used. If desired, to improve yield, male flowers should be removed and suckers pinched after the appearance of fruit set. Fruits ripen in late summer, usually in October, and can be stored until spring at room temperature.
