Iris Olympic

A stately accent in your garden: experience growing the 'Olimpiyskiy' iris

When it comes to landscaping that requires minimal attention but delivers maximum visual impact, the choice often falls on proven classics. The 'Olimpiyskiy' iris, developed by experts at the MSU Botanical Garden, is a prime example of breeding excellence that demonstrates remarkable adaptability to fluctuating weather conditions.

Operational features and aesthetics

While maintaining this variety, you immediately notice its structural stability. Standing at 70–90 cm tall, the flower stalks do not require mandatory staking, saving significant time for the gardener. The yellow petals possess a high color saturation that does not fade under direct sunlight—a crucial trait for regions with intense summer heat.

Practical maintenance tips

• Planting: 'Olimpiyskiy' performs best in sunny areas with well-drained soil. The variety dislikes waterlogging, so on heavy clay soils, we recommend adding sand to the planting hole.
• Maintenance: This cultivar is low-maintenance. Basic fertilization in spring before active growth is sufficient. After blooming, it is recommended to remove spent flower stalks to conserve plant energy and maintain the neat appearance of the foliage.
• Winter hardiness: The variety handles harsh winters very well. Mulching the rhizomes for the winter is a standard procedure that is more than sufficient for successful overwintering.

If you are looking for a reliable variety for borders or accent groups that will delight the eye for years without complex agrotechnics, this iris will fully meet your expectations.
