Description Kekfrankos
Kékfrankos — this is a grape variety originating from Central Europe and widely cultivated in countries such as Austria, Hungary, Germany, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Croatia. In Hungary, it is especially popular and occupies significant areas in the Kunshág region. This variety is also known by synonyms such as Lemberger, Blaufränkisch, Gamy, Frankovka, Modrá Frankinjá, and Frankonia. Kékfrankos grapes are characterized by black skins and large, whole, smooth, dark-green leaves that are curved in a channel shape. The clusters are broad-conical and dense, with black berries possessing a simple flavor. Kékfrankos is a technical variety with high and stable yields. It grows well on humus-carbonate soils, although it is susceptible to diseases such as mildew and oidium. Juice extraction from the berries reaches 75%, with skin content at 3.9%, and flesh, pulp, and seed content at 21.1%. Sugar content varies between 15–22.6 g/100 ml, while acidity ranges from 8.9 to 6.8 g/l. Due to these characteristics, the grape is used both for fresh consumption and for producing juices and red wines. Wines made from the Kékfrankos variety, such as Takler Kékfrankos, are renowned for their light tannic structure and complex aroma. The taste of these wines reveals notes of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and subtle spicy undertones, creating a harmonious balance between vibrancy and smoothness. These wines gradually open up in the glass, leaving a long and rich finish, making them a symbol of Hungarian winemaking and a popular choice among red wine connoisseurs.
