Tavrichanka 5 is a mustard variety developed by the Institute of Oilseed Crops and recognized as a national standard of Ukraine. The plant is distinguished by its high disease resistance, good productivity, and long seed storage period. The fruits are large and dense, ensuring a high yield – from 2 t/ha with conventional sowing to 2.1 t/ha with wide-row sowing. The vegetation period is 79–95 days, and seedlings sprout easily at temperatures of 1–2 °C and withstand frosts down to –6 °C.
Tavrichanka grows excellently in open ground and greenhouses, suitable for steppe, forest-steppe zone, and polder areas. Plant height ranges from 25 cm to 100 cm; stems are rigid, erect, and branched at the top. Flowering occurs in June–July, and fruits ripen in August. Seeds are light yellow in color, easily treated with fertilizers and irrigation.
The variety is widely used both in the food industry and on the home kitchen – its seeds are used as a spice and for the production of mustard oil. Due to its resistance to temperature and moisture fluctuations, Tavrichanka is suitable for growing in the conditions of the central and southern parts of the country, where the climate can be changeable. With proper care (regular weed removal, good lighting), the plant does not require special efforts, but if necessary, it responds well to top-dressing with nitrogen fertilizers.
