Chicory Cigal

Genetic Defense and Phytosanitary Resilience

The Sigal chicory by Rijk Zwaan is a high-tech leaf hybrid where breeding efforts have been concentrated on solving the primary challenges of intensive vegetable production: pathogen pressure and physiological disorders. Unlike standard varieties, Sigal features a refined resistance profile against fungal infections. The hybrid’s genetic code provides effective resistance to powdery mildew and leaf spot — diseases that typically compromise market quality and yield volumes in both greenhouse and humid open-field environments.

Necrosis Management and Field Durability

A key technical feature of this hybrid is its increased tolerance to marginal leaf necrosis and ring necrosis. For the producer, this translates to reduced culling rates during harvesting and post-harvest handling. Furthermore, Sigal demonstrates significant resistance to lettuce aphids, allowing for a substantial reduction in insecticide applications, making the produce highly desirable for the low-pesticide market segment.

Agronomic Features and Crop Quality

• Usage Type: Leaf (lettuce) type, designed for rapid vegetative growth and high marketable yield.
• Organoleptics: The vibrant green leaf color is paired with a well-balanced flavor profile. The characteristic chicory bitterness is expressed only slightly, making it a versatile ingredient for both HoReCa and retail sectors.
• Versatility: The hybrid is adapted for both fresh consumption and the processing industry, maintaining leaf integrity under various processing methods.

Dutch breeding expertise from Rijk Zwaan ensures the stability of Sigal’s characteristics across varying light and temperature regimes. It represents a choice for professional growers focused on predictable results and minimizing risks associated with phytosanitary status.
