Blackberry DrisBlackEight

Premium genetics by Driscoll’s: why choose DrisBlackEight?

In the highly competitive berry market, Driscoll’s «DrisBlackEight» stands out as a prime example of specialized breeding. Developed by Gavin R. Sills and Andrea M. Pabon, this blackberry variety is engineered for intensive commercial operations targeting both the fresh market and the processing sector.

Technical Specifications and Cultivation

The hallmark of this hybrid is the combination of erect cane growth and early maturity. Unlike sprawling varieties, DrisBlackEight forms a compact bush, which simplifies canopy management and maintenance. However, the presence of thorns necessitates the use of personal protective equipment, which should be factored into harvesting labor costs.

• Berry Size and Shape: Reaching 6 cm, these berries are among the largest in the premium segment. Their oval shape contributes to excellent shelf life and durability during shipping.
• Flavor Profile: The variety offers a distinct sweetness and deep aroma, setting it apart from more acidic competitors on retail shelves.
• Extended Production: The long-lasting fruiting cycle ensures a sustained presence in the market, providing a competitive edge for fresh retail supply chains.

Target Audience

DrisBlackEight is built for producers focused on quality and marketability. The firm texture and superior flavor profile make it an ideal choice for high-end clamshell packaging. Note that due to its intensive yield, the variety requires precision irrigation and nutrient management to maintain quality throughout the season. When frozen, the berry maintains its structural integrity, making it a viable option for the processing and frozen food industry.

Strengths: Impressive berry size (6 cm), early harvest window, high sugar content, dual-purpose (fresh/frozen).

Weaknesses: Presence of thorns makes harvesting more labor-intensive and requires strict safety protocols.
