Karaka Black

Karaka Black blackberry is a large-fruited New Zealand selection variety, known for its high yield and early ripening. This complex hybrid, obtained by crossing blackberry and dewberry, features a vigorous bush with flexible thorny canes, which can reach up to 3.5 meters in length and require trellising. Berries are large, up to 4 cm long and averaging 10-15 grams, with a cylindrical-conical shape, black color with a glossy sheen, and high firmness.

The flavor of Karaka Black berries is rich and harmonious with a pleasant acidity reminiscent of soft blackcurrant. Under conditions of under-ripening or cool climates, the flavor may be slightly more acidic. The variety features a long fruiting season lasting six to eight weeks, and a high, stable yield reaching over 25 tons per hectare in trials. Berries are well-suited for transport and can be stored for up to 5 days, making this variety attractive for commercial cultivation.

Karaka Black exhibits high cold tolerance, surviving temperatures down to -35°C, and resistance to major diseases, simplifying care and cultivation in various climates. The bush begins fruiting as early as the second year after planting, and its decorative appearance with glossy black berries and thorny canes will enhance any garden.
