Blackberry THORNFREE

Why Thornfree remains the standard for commercial berry production

The Thornfree blackberry variety, developed by the Zhigulevskie Sady Research Institute, is a reliable asset for farmers focused on the fresh market. The primary advantage of this variety is its thornless nature, which drastically reduces harvesting time. In commercial operations where efficiency and labor ergonomics are paramount, this feature is decisive when selecting plant material.

Agronomy and yield performance

Thornfree consistently delivers high yields, reaching 10–12 kg per bush under proper agricultural management. Its late maturation period allows farmers to extend the selling season, entering the market when other varieties have already finished fruiting. The berries feature an oval shape, a deep dark-purple color, and a balanced sweet-and-sour flavor, making them highly attractive to retail chains.

Practical scenarios for commercial operations

• Harvesting efficiency: The thornless canes allow staff to harvest without specialized protective equipment, effectively lowering production costs.
• Crop protection: High resistance to anthracnose and powdery mildew reduces the need for intensive fungicide applications, supporting farms aiming for lower pesticide usage.
• Logistics: The firm structure of the berries allows for medium-distance transport without compromising shelf appeal.
• Winter survival: With cold resistance down to -28°C, the variety can be successfully cultivated in regions with severe winters, requiring only basic protective coverage.

Thornfree is the choice for growers seeking a proven, predictable variety with high yield output that requires minimal maintenance compared to more demanding hybrids.
