Elderberry variety Cacanska Bestrna — a medium-ripening hybrid of Serbian selection, created by Dr. M. Stanisavljevic at the Experimental Institute of Horticulture in Cacak. This variety is characterized by large, oval-cylindrical berries with a glossy black skin and dense texture. The average fruit weight is about 9-11 grams, with individual berries reaching 14-15 grams. The berries have a very sweet and aromatic flavor with a slight acidity, making them attractive for fresh consumption as well as for processing into jams or preserves. The plant’s flowers are large and pink, well-pollinated, which contributes to stable fruiting. The plant is vigorous, reaching up to 3.5 meters in height, forming 4-5 thornless branches with short internodes. Fruit ripens on lateral shoots distributed along the entire length of the branches, while flowers on fruiting branches are concentrated, facilitating harvest. The variety is highly cold-resistant — tolerating temperatures down to -26...-35 °C, allowing cultivation in various climatic zones, including Ukraine and other European regions. The bush is resistant to most diseases and pests when preventive measures are followed. Cacanska Bestrna prefers sunny locations with fertile and well-drained soils, is low-maintenance, and suitable for commercial cultivation. The main harvest occurs in the third decade of July, and fruiting lasts several weeks. Berries are well-transported due to their dense structure, making the variety popular for commercial production. Due to its flavor, cold resistance, and high yield, Cacanska Bestrna is an excellent choice for both amateur gardeners and professional farmers.
