Blackberry DrisBlackThirteen

Genetic Architecture and Morphology of Driscolls DrisBlackSortin

This blackberry variety represents the culmination of breeding work by Driscolls under the leadership of Michael D. Ferguson. From a technical standpoint, the cultivar is the product of targeted selection focused on intensive commercial production. The semi-erect growth habit of the canes is a key structural advantage, allowing for optimized planting density and simplified plantation maintenance and mechanization.

Technological Potential and Productivity

The thornless nature of the canes is a critical feature, minimizing physical damage to the fruit during harvest and significantly reducing manual labor costs. The late ripening period allows growers to segment the market, delivering high-quality produce long after the primary early-season supply has been exhausted. Particular attention should be given to fruit sizing: the variety displays stable berry dimensions ranging from 6 to 10 cm, positioning it within the premium segment for the fresh market.

• Cane Type: Semi-erect, providing a balance between high yield and ergonomic harvesting.
• Agronomic Advantages: Thornless canes eliminate staff injury risks and reduce surface bruising of the berries.
• Gastronomic Profile: Dominant sweet dessert flavor profile, specifically optimized for premium retail.

DrisBlackSortin was developed as a specialized instrument to meet the demand for high-end dessert blackberries. The high density and commercial aesthetic of the fruit ensure integrity during transport, which is essential for fresh-market logistics. The consistently large fruit size (up to 10 cm) establishes this variety as a benchmark in its category.
