Blackberry Columbia Giant

American Innovation in Berry Farming

The 'Columbia Giant' blackberry is a distinguished variety originating from the United States, designed to meet the demands of the premium berry market. As a trailing blackberry variety, it has carved out a significant reputation among growers for its massive fruit size and complete lack of thorns, transforming labor-intensive harvesting into a more efficient process.

Technical Specifications and Cultivation

• Fruit Characteristics: The berries are cone-shaped with a glossy black finish, reaching up to 12 cm in length. Known for a consistently sweet flavor profile, they are highly sought after for both fresh markets and high-end culinary applications.
• Growth Habit: Being a trailing variety, 'Columbia Giant' requires trellising. Proper support structures are essential to manage the shoots and ensure optimal exposure to sunlight and airflow.
• Hardiness and Care: The variety exhibits strong resistance to common pests. However, with a cold tolerance of -14 °C, it requires mandatory winter protection in most temperate climates to ensure the survival of the canes and future yields.

On the market, 'Columbia Giant' is synonymous with quality and scale. The thornless nature of the plant is a major advantage for commercial operations, reducing the time and physical effort required for maintenance. While the need for winter covering adds to the seasonal workload, the reward is a high-yield, premium-grade crop that sets the standard for modern, large-fruited blackberry production.
