Basil Zhigolo

Compact Purple Basil with a Bold Profile

"Zhigolo" is a strategic choice for growers who prioritize space efficiency and intense flavor. Developed by the Gavrish breeding firm and the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production, this purple basil cultivar is adapted for intensive cultivation in both greenhouses and open fields. Its defining trait is its compact structure: reaching only 20–30 cm in height, it develops a dense rosette of large lanceolate leaves, making it an excellent candidate for rotation crops.

Practical Farm Applications

For market gardeners, "Zhigolo" addresses the need for early-season fresh produce. Its compact size makes it suitable for specific operational scenarios:

• High-Density Planting: Requiring minimal space, this variety yields 0.5–1 kg per square meter, allowing for maximum efficiency in greenhouse operations.
• Pot Culture: The plant's small, sturdy frame is ideal for container growing, catering to the growing market for live, "on-the-root" herbs sold in retail outlets.
• Culinary Processing: A complex profile of clove and pepper notes makes this basil highly desirable for salad mixes and dry seasoning production. Its potent flavor profile means less plant material is needed to achieve the desired aromatic impact.

From an agrotechnical perspective, "Zhigolo" is low-maintenance, though it responds well to consistent irrigation and tip pruning to encourage bushiness. In commercial settings, the variety is favored for its post-harvest shelf life and predictable maturation cycle. It is the optimal choice for producers looking for a consistent, high-quality result on small plots of land.
