Velvet

The "Velvet" basil variety is a mid-season plant with a period from full emergence to the beginning of market readiness of 65-70 days. The plant reaches a height of 25-30 cm and is characterized by good foliage. The leaves are dark green, smooth, up to 8 cm long, and possess an unique specific menthol taste and aroma. The mass of one plant can reach up to 350 grams. This variety is rich in vitamins and minerals, has tonic properties and contributes to improved digestion.

"Velvet" basil is intended for consumption fresh, and also suitable for drying, freezing, pickling and flavoring vinegar, oil and drinks. For growing, it is recommended to sow seeds for seedlings or in open ground at the end of May - early June at a depth of 1.5-2 cm. Seedlings are transplanted into open ground at an age of 50-60 days, while it is important to observe proper care, including timely watering, weeding, loosening and feeding.

The agronomy of growing "Velvet" basil provides for planting on organic-rich loamy soils, well-heated and protected from cold winds sections. Seeds are sown in boxes at a depth of 0.5-1 cm at the end of March - early April at an optimal germination temperature of 20-25 °C. Emergence occurs in 10-15 days. Seedlings are transplanted into open ground after the threat of frost with a distance between plants of 15-20 cm and between rows 60 cm. For successful establishment, 2-3 waterings are required. Care for the plants includes loosening of interrows, weeding, watering and application of fertilizers.
