Engineering potential of the winter barley «Zymovyi»

The Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (Odesa) designed the «Zymovyi» variety as a tool to minimize risks when cultivating in the unstable climate of the Ukrainian steppe and forest-steppe zones. The primary technical objective of this genotype is to combine high regenerative capacity with physiological resilience.

Biophysical parameters and performance

• Adaptability to limiting factors: The variety demonstrates increased cold resistance (7-8 points), which is critical in the absence of snow cover during periods of sharp temperature fluctuations.
• Morphological stability: The short, sturdy stem effectively resists lodging even when high doses of nitrogen fertilizers are applied, allowing agronomists to use intensive technologies without the risk of crop loss during grain filling.
• Phytosanitary profile: The plant's genetic architecture includes complex resistance to key pathogens: powdery mildew, helminthosporiosis, and leaf rust. This reduces the need for fungicide treatments during 1-2 stages of vegetation.

Practical output

«Zymovyi» is characterized by intensive tillering, which ensures high stand density by harvest time. The uniformity of the ears and high thousand-kernel weight make it a reliable asset for commercial farms focused on barley export quality standards. This variety requires adherence to optimal sowing dates; deviations towards early or late planting reduce tillering potential, which can only be mitigated by strict control of plant density.
