Barley Sontsedar

Mironivka-bred barley: A stable choice for Ukrainian soils

The «Sontsedar» spring barley is a testament to the decades of expertise provided by the V.M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat (NAAS). Developed for the specific climate of Ukraine, this two-row variety has earned a reputation for reliability. Unlike modern, highly intensive hybrids that require precise and costly inputs, Sontsedar offers a balanced approach, delivering consistent yields across various soil types and management levels.

Key performance indicators

With a vegetation period of 80–90 days, Sontsedar is optimized to beat the mid-summer drought, ensuring grain maturity before heat stress becomes critical. The plants grow to a height of 70–100 cm, offering excellent standability and ease of harvest. The grain size is notable, with a 1,000-seed mass reaching 48–52 grams, meeting high quality standards for malting and feed use.

• Variety Type: Two-row spring barley.
• Disease Resistance: High natural resistance to loose smut (Ustilago nuda) and onion stem smut.
• Agronomic Advantage: Reduced dependency on heavy fungicide treatments due to robust genetic resistance.

By integrating Sontsedar into their rotation, growers minimize the risks associated with fungal pathogens. The variety’s specific resistance to stem smut is particularly valuable for farms with complex crop rotations, including vegetable production. Choosing Sontsedar means investing in a proven, resilient variety that reliably translates seasonal efforts into consistent harvest volume.
