Barley Avatar

Stable yields in drought conditions

The 'Avatar' spring barley is a breeding product developed by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (Odesa), designed for farmers facing unpredictable weather patterns. Unlike many imported hybrids that require perfect growing conditions, 'Avatar' demonstrates reliability even in the dry seasons typical of Southern and Central Ukraine.

Agronomic Profile

The key differentiator of this variety is its high tillering intensity and robust ear. With a plant height of 60–70 cm, the barley resists lodging, which is critical for mechanized harvesting. The two-row ear type ensures the formation of large grains (1,000-kernel weight reaches 48–50 g), directly impacting marketable yield.

Strengths and Protection

• Winter Hardiness: An 8-point rating allows the variety to successfully withstand early spring frosts, which are often fatal to less adapted spring crops.
• Phytosanitary Profile: The variety has strong genetic resistance to loose smut and downy mildew. Lower susceptibility to helminthosporiosis, powdery mildew, and stem smut allows farmers to optimize costs for fungicide treatments, reducing pesticide load.
• Early Maturity: A vegetation period of 80–90 days makes 'Avatar' an ideal fit for crop rotation, ensuring maturity before the onset of critical summer heat.

Who is this variety for?

'Avatar' is the choice for farms focusing on food and feed grain with high protein content (11% nitrogenous substances). Due to its plasticity, the variety best reveals its potential in average to fertile soils, minimizing loss risks under adverse climatic factors.
