Aster Sophia

Technical profile of the Sofia variety

This aster variety, bred by the Institute of Horticulture of the NAAS, is a specialized annual genetically adapted for professional cut flower production. Unlike decorative bedding varieties, this selection maintains a precise vegetative balance: with a stem height ranging from 50 to 80 cm, the plant develops a robust, lodging-resistant peduncle, which is a critical factor for intensive cultivation.

Inflorescence architecture and morphology

The peony-like flower shape, reaching 10–15 cm in diameter, is achieved through a dense arrangement of ray florets that overlap to create a full, high-marketability appearance. The bicolored coloration, dominated by white, is a strategic breeding choice that enhances demand in the floristry segment, where such blooms serve as either a foundational or accent element in floral arrangements.

• Biological resource: An annual crop requiring precise agronomic management to reach maximum floral caliber.
• Stem construction: A length of 50–80 cm provides the ideal dimension for standard floristry packaging without the need for additional trimming or processing.
• Cut flower technology: The density and size of the bloom ensure excellent transportability and long vase life when proper temperature regimes are maintained.

Utilizing the Sofia variety is an efficient choice for cut-flower-oriented farms due to the predictable bloom size and the stability of phenotypic traits established by Ukrainian breeders.
